20 years of town twinning in Ichikawa: ceremony to mark the anniversary visit

As part of the 20th anniversary of the town twinning between Rosenheim and Ichikawa, Japan, a 30-strong delegation from Japan visits Rosenheim. The partnership was honoured in a highly official setting at a ceremony in the town hall.

"Tradition is very important in Japan and Bavaria and we have a good basis for our twin town. But how well it works can be seen in our everyday lives: In regular student exchanges with the municipal girls' secondary school, where Japanese students stay with Rosenheim families, or in sporting exchanges at the training camp for young Japanese footballers here in Rosenheim. Our town twinning does not just exist on paper, but is lived on the ground, despite the distance of almost 13,000 kilometres," said Lord Mayor Andreas März.

At the ceremony, Ichikawa's mayor Koh Tanaka also emphasised the importance of the town twinning and the friendly relations. This was followed by entries in the city's Golden Book and a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.

Later on Thursday, the delegation got to know Rosenheim better during a guided tour of the city and followed in the footsteps of the Titanic in the engine shed. On Friday, they visited the UNESCO World Heritage Herrenchiemsee Castle and the Fraueninsel before spending a Bavarian evening on the Samerberg. At the opening of the autumn festival, the delegation will be part of the procession and follow the tapping of the beer. This will be followed by a visit to the girls' secondary school.

The town twinning between Rosenheim and Ichikawa was officially established in 2008 and is based on a memorandum dated 14 July 2004, in which both towns pledged to support educational, sporting and cultural youth exchanges.

The first paragraph of the twinning agreement reads:

"It is the will of both twin towns to work for the peaceful living and welfare of the people in the interests of the citizens, to create mutual trust and to deepen the friendly relations in an ongoing partnership between Rosenheim and Ichikawa."

A delegation from Rosenheim, chaired by the Lord Mayor, had already visited Ichikawa in the anniversary year 2024.
