The corresponding application for the issuance/extension of a driving license must be submitted to the responsible driving license authority (this application is often also filled out directly with the selected driving school).
The driving license is to be issued for the first time for the respective class or an existing driving license is to be extended by an additional class if the applicant
- has his or her normal place of residence in Germany
- has reached the required minimum age:
- 15 years for class AM
- 16 years for the classes A1, L, and T
- 18 years for the classes A2, B, BE, C1 or C1E
- 21 years for the classes C, CE, D1, or D1E
- 24 years for direct access to category A and for category D, DE
- is qualified to drive motor vehicles
- has completed the required training at a driving school
- has demonstrated the ability to drive motor vehicles in a theoretical and practical test for the requested driving license class.
The following documents must be submitted with the application
driving license classes AM, A1, A2, A, B, BE, L and T:
- identity card or passport
- a photograph that complies with the passport regulations
- eye test certificate (not older than two years)
- proof of training in first aid
driving license classes C, CE, C1, C1E, D, DE, D1, D1E additionally:
- an ophthalmological certificate on eyesight (not older than two years)
- a medical certificate on the physical and mental aptitude (not older than one year).
Both examinations can also be carried out by an occupational and/or company physician.
For classes D and D1, a medical-psychological certificate may be required.
