The international driving license is only valid in conjunction with the national EU card driving license and is usually required for non-European countries (e.g. USA, Russia, Australia, etc.) as proof of an existing driving license. It is a translation of the national driving license and therefore issued in different languages. It is only issued for a limited period of three years and cannot be extended.
It can only be issued if the applicant already has an EU card driving license. If this is not yet the case, the old paper driving license must be exchanged for the new card driving license in advance or at the same time (exchange obligation).
The following documents must be presented when applying for an international driver's license:
- Identity card or passport
- 1 current biometric photograph in accordance with the Passport Ordinance
- Original driver's license
If you already have the new card driver's license, the International Driver's License can be issued directly on the day of application at the authority (prior appointment must be made). In this case, a personal application and receipt of the international driver's license would not be mandatory and could then also be done by an authorized adult person (written informal power of attorney) and the above-mentioned documents.
