Loss of registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document)

You have lost the registration certificate Part I (vehicle registration document).

    • Valid identity card or passport of the vehicle owner.
    • If an old type of vehicle registration document is available (issued before 01.10.2005), this must also be submitted (for the purpose of exchange for a registration certificate Part II).
    • Proof of a valid main inspection (inspection report)
    • Affidavit: If a replacement registration certificate Part I (vehicle registration document) is newly applied for due to loss, an affidavit must be submitted by the keeper/owner or the responsible person to the registration authority in person, or alternatively a notarized affidavit must be submitted or
    • in the event of theft of the registration certificate Part I: theft report from the police
    • In the case of vehicles that have been taken out of service, a declaration of loss that the keeper/owner can submit in person to the registration authority is sufficient.
    • If applicable, power of attorney from the authorized representative (if no personal visit is required), the authorized representative must identify him/herself.

     

Loss of registration certificate part II (vehicle letter)

You have lost the registration certificate part II (vehicle letter).

    • valid identity card or passport of the vehicle owner(s)
    • Registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document)
    • Proof of a valid general inspection (test report, vehicle registration certificate)
    • Affidavit: If a new application is made for a replacement registration certificate Part II (vehicle registration document) due to loss, the keeper/owner or the person responsible must submit an affidavit to the registration authority in person or alternatively submit a notarized affidavit. In case of theft of the registration certificate Part II, please present the theft report from the German police.
    • If applicable, proof of authorization to dispose of the vehicle, if the affidavit is not submitted by the holder him/herself (e.g. purchase contract, declaration by the holder).

     

Loss of license plates

You have lost one or both license plates.

    • valid identity card or passport of the vehicle owner(s)
    • If applicable, power of attorney of the authorized representative; the authorized representative must identify himself/herself.
    • Registration certificate Part I and Part II (vehicle registration document, vehicle title)
    • Proof of a valid general inspection (vehicle registration document, inspection report)
    • If applicable, license plate number still available
    • Declaration of loss/notification of theft from the German police

     

To prevent misuse, the license plate is blocked for a period of ten years after loss or theft. The vehicle must therefore be transferred to a new license plate.
