Elisabeth Block Square and Remembrance Loop Inaugurated

The first memorial ribbon for the victims of Nazi terror was unveiled today at the Rosenheim Municipal Girls' Realschule as part of the "Rosenheimer Weg". At the same time, the "Elisabeth-Block-Platz" was inaugurated, the new address of the girls' secondary school.

"May the living memory of the past create a peaceful present and future," said 2nd Mayor Daniel Artmann. Artmann represented Mayor Andreas März, who was meeting with the Bavarian Association of Cities at its European Office in Brussels. März sent his greetings: "The Rosenheimer Weg is a worthy commemoration of the victims of a horror that robbed Rosenheimers of their lives right here in our city. It is our duty not to forget the Nazi terror and to ensure that it can never be repeated."

With the installation of the Möbius strip - the endless memorial ribbon by artist Christiane Huber - the first element of the Rosenheimer Weg for a living culture of remembrance was installed. The memorial ribbon was looped around a tree and is intended to grow with the tree. Analogously, the culture of remembrance in Rosenheim is also to grow with the installation of further memorial ribbons.

After an intensive debate, including an artist competition, the Rosenheim City Council decided in favor of Christiane Huber's work of art as a memorial sign for Rosenheim at the beginning of September 2022.

Elisabeth Block was a student at the girls' secondary school. Her fate received historical attention due to numerous diary entries, which ended abruptly on March 08, 1942. Elisabeth Block was murdered at the age of 19 because of her Jewish origin.
