City archive receives partial estate of former Lord Mayor Josef Sebald

The Rosenheim City Archive has taken over a partial estate from the descendants of former Lord Mayor Josef "Sepp" Sebald (1905-1960). This includes original documents from the Nazi era, including Sebald's certificate of release from Dachau concentration camp and correspondence relating to his compensation after 1945. A photo album with around 250 photographs was also handed over and contains previously unknown images of Rosenheim, mainly from the 1930s and 1940s.

The donation is a valuable addition to the city archive's collection. The documents provide new insights into Rosenheim's contemporary history. After archival processing - including professional packaging and digitalisation - the material will be made accessible to interested users. This will enable it to be incorporated into the city's culture of remembrance in the future.

Josef Sebald (1905-1960) was a social democrat, persecuted by the Nazis and twice imprisoned in a concentration camp. After the end of the war, he became a member of the Rosenheim city council and later a member of the state parliament. In 1958, he won the election for Lord Mayor. During his short time in office, important decisions were made regarding the city's development, such as the redevelopment of the salt works site. In honour of his work, the Sepp-Sebald-Siedlung now bears his name. As a further sign of remembrance, the Rosenheim City Council has decided

to erect a memorial sign at Sebald's former home address at Königstraße 15 opposite the town hall this year.
