Stability seriously jeopardised: oak tree has to be felled
Because it is no longer stable, the large English oak on Am Gries in front of the junction with Äußere Münchener Straße has to be felled for safety reasons. The tree is infested with a wood-destroying fungus that has caused massive damage to the root area.
"The decision to fell this characteristic oak tree was not an easy one. However, the root damage is so extensive that the tree could fall over in strong winds. This has been confirmed by tensile tests and an external expert opinion," says Mayor Andreas März.
By felling the tree, the city of Rosenheim is fulfilling its duty to ensure public safety. The oak tree is located on a heavily frequented section of road with a footpath and cycle path.
The felling is planned for next Tuesday (04.11.2025) during the autumn holidays in order to keep traffic disruption to a minimum. The Am Gries road area will have to be completely closed for the work, meaning that the city bus 402 will not be able to stop at the bus stops on Finsterwalderstraße during this time. The bus stop on Äußere Münchener Straße will be available instead.
"To compensate for the oak tree, we are planting two new oak trees around eight metres high in the same place. We can't plant larger trees. But they are still growing and will reach a height of up to 25 metres," says März.
The felling of the tree is part of the maintenance and traffic safety measures of the Rosenheim 2025 building stock and was already publicly announced in the Environment Committee on 29 July 2025.
