Every death must - in addition to the registry office - also be reported immediately (during the night or on Sundays and public holidays on the morning of the next working day) to the cemetery administration for burial or transfer.

The persons who must also arrange for the post-mortem examination, i.e. spouses, children, etc., are obliged to give notice. (§ 1 BestV). As a rule, however, a contracted funeral home takes care of this notification.

On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, the cemetery administration is closed, so that the duty of priority can only be fulfilled on the following working day.

In order to establish the identity of the corpse, it is imperative that the body slip, also known as the "foot slip," be affixed to the corpse. Once attached, it must not be removed under any circumstances, not even during the care and burial of the corpse.
