Deregistration of a flat

In principle, no obligation to deregister an apartment

It is not necessary to deregister your previous home in Germany if you move out of your home and move into a new, previously unregistered home in Germany . By means of data exchange between the registration authorities, the moving-in authority informs the moving-out authority of the change of residence.

A deregistration obligation exists only in the following cases:

  • if a person moves out of the previous dwelling and does not move into another dwelling in Germany (i.e. becomes a non-resident)
  • if a person moves out of the previous secondary residence and returns to the main residence (giving up the secondary residence)
  • if a person moves out of the previous domestic residence and moves into a residence abroad

Please note:

It is possible to deregister a residence a maximum of one week before moving out, but it must be submitted to the registration office within two weeks of moving out.

Deregistration of secondary residence / secondary residence

  • If the person subject to the registration obligation moves out of one of his/her secondary residences in Germany and does not move into a new residence (return to the existing main residence in Germany), the deregistration of the secondary residence can be made either at the registration office of the previous secondary residence or at the registration office of the main residence.
