The art business in Rosenheim during National Socialism: event with cultural award winner Dr Felix Steffan
How was the art scene in Rosenheim and the region organised during the National Socialist era? Who decided which works were produced, exhibited and ultimately sold? And what role did the artists themselves play within this system? These and other questions will be addressed in a book discussion with Dr Felix Steffan on Thursday, 30 April 2026, 18:30 at the Städtische Galerie.
The winner of the City of Rosenheim's Cultural Promotion Prize will present key findings from his publication "Die Peripherie als Zentrum: Der Kunstbetrieb in Rosenheim und dem Chiemgau 1904-1968" in conversation with Dr Christian Höschler (Rosenheim City Archive) and Dr Patricia Wiegmann (Städtische Galerie Rosenheim).
"Dr Felix Steffan's research findings show that a dense network of political functionaries, artists, dealers and institutions shaped the art scene in Rosenheim and Chiemgau at this time. In order to make long-term breaks and continuities visible, he deliberately focuses on the period before the National Socialist takeover and the first decades after 1945," says city archivist Dr Christian Höschler.
The author's talk will be followed by an opportunity to view the Kunstverein Rosenheim's annual exhibition KUNST AKTUELL, which can be seen at the Städtische Galerie Rosenheim until 14 June 2026.
